Alligators in the Sewer: No Longer an Urban Legend

What is the strangest place to find an alligator? If you thought Queens New York than you would have guessed correct. The old urban legend that alligators are breeding in the sewers of New York may not be such a legend after all. From the local CBS affiliate it was reported on August 23, 2010 that a two foot alligator was found under a car. Local animal control officers had no idea where the alligator came from. They stated that it would be placed into a new environment far away from the city The last time that an 2ft alligator was discovered in New York was 2001. It is illegal to keep alligators within the city limits.

The question is if there is one running loose will there be others?

In Japan it has always been that the old and the dead have been revered. However, in the past few weeks it has been discovered that the Japanese are refusing to let go and for all the wrong reasons. Having thought that Sogen Kato was the oldest living man in Tokyo officials decided to honor him. Upon trying to get access and repeatedly being rebuffed by family members officials decided something was wrong. When officials finally gained access to Mr. Kato they discovered the mummified remains of the supposed 111 year old man. He had been dead for over 30 years and the family kept him "alive" to collect over $100,000 worth of his pension.
Just recently it was also discovered that a 64 year old man kept the remains of his deceased mother in a backpack. When asked why he stated that he had no money for a funeral so decided that he wouldn't report her death. He also collected his deceased mother's pension from 2001 when she had first died. Such discoveries have sparked officials to investigate Japanese citizens that are on record over the age of 100 in hopes of finding out if they are alive.

Heinz Peter Haustein, one of the two treasure hunters and a member of Germany's parliament, said: "We have already hit a hollow area under the surface, it's filled with water and we are not sure if it is the cave we are looking for."Digging was stopped more than a week ago amid safety concerns, as authorities and the treasure hunters feared that the shaft might collapse and that the cave -- if it is there -- may be rigged with explosives or poisonous booby traps.At a news conference Friday, Christian Hanisch, the other treasure hunter, said that geological surveying equipment had located a possible cave about 30 feet under the surface containing "precious metals that can only be either gold or silver. The instruments would not have reacted to any other metal like copper." The room looked so majestic, many called it "the eighth wonder of the world." It disappeared after the war, and today a replica stands in its place in St. Petersburg.Although parts of the Amber Room have resurfaced, the vast majority remains missing.Haustein has been looking for the room for more than 12 years.

"I am certain that large parts of the Amber Room are buried somewhere here," he said. He said he has collected much circumstantial evidence suggesting that the Nazis hid the Amber Room in old copper mines around Deutschneudorf, but he has no proof.Haustein said the Nazis began bringing valuables including art, gold and silver to the region around Deutschneudorf as early as summer 1944.Deutschneudorf is in Germany's Ore Mountains, and the mountain where the treasure hunters claim to have found the Nazi gold was a copper mine until the 19th century. Although the mine was shut down in 1882, geologists found evidence that soldiers from Hitler's Wehrmacht -- the German armed forces -- had been there. The machine guns, parts of uniforms and explosives are on display at the town's museum.Though both treasure hunters say they are certain they will find cultural goods, both admit that they fear disappointment."Of course, if you embark on something like this, you ask yourself: 'What if we find nothing again? What if I was fooled?' " Haustein said. "But every man has to go his own way, for better or for worse."If they do find the treasure, Haustein says, it would legally belong to Germany, although he would recommend that Germany give any Amber Room parts back to Russia. Treasure hunters have typically received rewards of 10 percent of the value of the goods found, but Hanisch says there are no laws dictating the reward amount.

Mysterious only in the fact that everything seemed so normal aside from the crew vanishing. The sails were up, one was badly shredded, food was placed out on the table ready to eat, a laptop was on, and the GPS system was fully functional. I hate spiders. I hate them, I hate them, I hate them! And as I sat here and did this research my skin crawled and now I have the permanent itchy, crawly skin which I will never get rid of. The Solifugae, or Camel Spider so named for its habitat relation only to the the camel is not really a spider, although it is in the Arachnid family. It is not poisonous and does not eat the flesh of American troops while they sleep. they are however, Big and gross and so much like a spider I am getting Skived out.
